Hugo Sanchez Hernandez received his PhD in Psychological Science, with a specialization in Affective Science and a minor in Social Psychology, at University of California, Irvine. He completed his Master of Arts and Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at California State University, Long Beach (a double major with Film). Hugo is currently an NIMH T32 Postdoctoral Fellow at UCLA working on Project STRIVE (STudents RIsing aboVE). His research focuses on the interplay of culture and socioeconomic status (SES) in influencing the association between emotions and psychological health. He examines how the emotions experienced by status-shifting individuals, such as first-generation college students, as they bridge their differing SES worlds (e.g., family and university environments) influence health outcomes. Hugo’s work aims to inform societal understanding of how emotions are managed across the social hierarchy and raises important questions about the potential well-being and health impacts for ethnic minority students transitioning to higher education, an avenue that he is pursuing further through working with Dr. Anna Lau and Dr. Andrew Fuligni.
